What the Academic Discussion task measures
The Academic Discussion task asks you to read a short professor's question and two student replies, then add your own opinion in about 60 seconds. Graders score your fluency, lexical resource, grammar and pronunciation, plus how well your idea fits the discussion.
A reliable 5-sentence template
- State your position clearly.
- Give one specific reason.
- Add a concrete example or detail.
- Briefly compare with one of the students.
- Close with a forward-looking sentence.
Common pitfalls
- Repeating the prompt instead of stating an opinion.
- Vague examples without numbers, places, or names.
- Long pauses while planning — outline 10 seconds, speak 50 seconds.
